An entry door in this climate is asked to do three jobs at once: seal against a January wind, survive direct west-facing August sun without warping, and still look like the front of your home. Material choice decides which of those it does well.
Fiberglass is the default recommendation for most homes here. It does not warp, dent or rust, it takes a convincing wood grain finish, and its insulating value is far better than a solid wood slab. Steel is the strongest option per dollar and the right answer for a service or garage-to-house door, though it will show a dent and needs the finish maintained where it can rust. Solid wood is still the most beautiful and the most demanding, and on an exposed elevation it needs refinishing on a schedule most homeowners do not keep.
When a door sticks in summer and rattles in winter, homeowners usually blame the slab. Nine times out of ten the frame has moved, the sill has settled, or the original install was shimmed to hide an out of square opening. Replacing the slab alone into a bad frame gets you the same complaint a year later.
We measure the opening in three places, check the sill for level and the jamb for plumb, and tell you honestly whether you need a slab, a pre-hung unit, or frame repair first. A full pre-hung replacement costs more up front and is the only thing that fixes an opening that has shifted.
Most forced entries through a front door do not break the door, they break the jamb where a short screw was driven into trim rather than framing. We fit reinforced strike plates with long screws into the stud, which costs very little and changes the outcome. On the weather side, a new door only performs if the weatherstrip and sweep are fitted to the actual opening, and we adjust both at the final walkthrough rather than leaving them at factory settings.
A straightforward pre-hung swap is usually a single day. If the frame or sill has to be rebuilt, or we find rot in the surrounding structure, it can run to two. Your home is never left open overnight.

Sidelights and transoms bring real daylight into an entry hall that otherwise depends on a ceiling fixture.
