Window quotes are deliberately hard to compare, because every manufacturer names its glass packages differently. Three numbers actually matter in this climate, and everything else is detail. U-factor measures how much heat escapes, and lower is better for our winters. Solar heat gain coefficient measures how much sun heat comes through, and lower helps on west and south elevations in August. Air leakage measures how much passes through the assembly itself, which is where cheap windows quietly lose.
Ask any contractor for those three figures on the exact unit being quoted, not the manufacturer’s best performing model. If a quote will not produce them, that tells you something on its own.
An insert, sometimes called a pocket replacement, fits a new unit into the existing frame. It is faster, cheaper and preserves interior and exterior trim, and it is the right answer when the existing frame is square, dry and sound. A full frame replacement removes everything back to the rough opening, which is the only option when the frame has rotted or the opening has shifted, and the only way to re-flash the opening properly.
We will tell you which one your house needs at the measure, and we will not quote inserts into a frame that should be replaced simply because it makes the number look better against a competitor.
A typical crew fits eight to twelve straightforward inserts in a day. Full frame replacements, second storey work and anything needing structural repair run slower. We never open more than we can close and seal the same day.
Yes. Windows are removed and replaced one opening at a time, so the house is never broadly open to weather. Sealants have temperature limits, so on the coldest days we adjust product and technique rather than pushing on regardless.
For most homes, the honest gain over a good double pane package is modest on energy alone. Where triple pane earns its cost is noise, so on a busy street or near a highway it is a genuinely different experience.

Two crews can fit identical windows and produce very different results five years later. The difference is in the parts you cannot see once the trim goes on. The opening has to be shimmed so the frame is square and the sash operates without being forced. The gap between frame and rough opening has to be insulated without over-packing it, because expanding foam under pressure will bow a frame and stop a window closing. The head flashing has to lap over the housewrap, not under it, or water is directed into the wall rather than out of it.
None of that shows on a quote. It shows when a window still opens easily and the wall below it is still dry a decade on.
